In this chapter, a first look is given at the interactions of light with matter, introducing many of the basic ideas needed for studying real-world quantum systems. We begin with the photoelectric effect and then discuss the quantization of the electromagnetic field and the physics of lasers, before giving a brief introduction to nonlinear optics.
