Women experience various forms of exclusion in urban areas, and public space infrastructure is one such domain where the design often disregards the perceptions of women, posing challenges to women's usability of public spaces. Recently, many cities have introduced outdoor gym facilities in public parks to offer physical exercise options to urban dwellers. These outdoor gyms’ usability and design preferences have not been investigated in Indian cities from a women’s usage viewpoint. This study aims to assess the usability of outdoor gyms for women in urban public parks. This study adopted mixed-method research where observations, questionnaire-based surveys, and interviews were conducted between December 2022 and January 2023. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in two public parks in Mangalore city, where 102 women of different age groups participated in the study. The survey consisted of questionnaires that collected demographic data and outdoor gym usability-related preferences from women. The study results were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results show that the two outdoor gyms in the public parks were perceived as usable for the physical activity of women, with one park being average and the other being considered good. Understanding the spatial design aspects, focusing on the user-centric design of outdoor gyms, and offering safety and maintenance were important considerations for designing usable outdoor gyms for women.
