Sea-level rise is a matter of common concern across the society, particularly in the context of climate change. The present estimate indicates that the global mean sea level rose by 3.4 mm/year between 1992 and 2016. The rate of sea-level rise has been higher since the era of industrial development. Analysis of the tide gauge data showed that the Indian coast is experiencing an average rise of 1–2 mm/year. The rise is large in the case of Diamond Harbour. Being located in the Ganges Delta, this station also experiences subsidence. The satellite altimeter data available since 1992 may help refine the findings. A long-term perspective plan is necessary as a large section of people in India lives in the coastal zone.
