In order to protect the fragile ecology of the coastal regions, the Ministry of Environment and Forest, now known as Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, in 1991 notified the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) to regulate construction and economic activities and to check the rampant pollution in the coastal areas. Realizing the special needs of the islands in contrast to the mainland coastal areas, the Islands Protection Zone (IPZ) was notified in 2011 and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (A&N Islands) and Lakshadweep Islands came under its ambit. Another change was initiated and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notified the Island Coastal Regulation Zone (ICRZ) on 8 March 2019 for the islands of India. How does the ICRZ 2019 differ from the CRZ 1991 and the IPZ 2011? What are the relaxations in the land use of the islands’ coasts? What will be the impacts of these relaxations on the coastal ecology of the A&N Islands? Based on secondary data analysis and archival studies, this chapter attempts to address these research questions and concludes that the ICRZ 2019 will have ecologically damaging impacts on the coastline of the A&N Islands. Therefore, it is suggested that the ICRZ 2019 may be revisited.

摘要
