Odisha coastal plain is dynamic, geomorphologically diverse, challenging and rich in natural resources including rare earth deposits. Dominantly depositional, the coast is prograding in nature and called Hex deltaic and the Gift of Six Rivers despite with almost no-fan-shaped delta except in the case of the Mahanadi River. The coastal landforms are of marine, fluvial and denudational origin. Three parallel tracts from the coast towards hinterlands, namely, the salt tract, the arable tract and the sub-montane tract, are well evident. Rich in geo-biodiversity, the Odisha coastal plain houses some of the internationally important ecosystems like the Chilika Lake, Mangroves at Bhitarkanika, Olive Ridley Turtles, Saltwater crocodiles and Migratory birds, apart from abundant coastal and pelagic fish resources. The Shoreline fluctuations, land degradation, sedimentation, deteriorated water quality, cyclonic disturbances and flooding are some of the geomorphological challenges with perceptible ecological ramifications and cascading impacts on human society. These challenges are intrinsically connected to the global mega trends of climate change, sea level rise and sustainability. The present work intends to draw a comprehensive account of the geomorphic challenges and state of natural regions in the coastal zone of Odisha following ‘umbrella review’ method based on the available secondary data set and practiced data democracy to maintain the quality of this research work. This study recommends a policy tool delineating homogenous units as Natural Resource Regions for sustainable management of coastal Odisha.
