In response to climate change and the Canadian Government commitment in 2015 to further reduce national GHG emissions under the Paris Agreement, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects continue to be developed in Alberta, the largest oil and gas producing province, to further reduce CO2 emissions from the hydrocarbon sector. Since 2015, the Shell Quest Project and Alberta Carbon Trunkline have captured and stored more than 11.5 million tons of CO2. Due to the significant capital investment required for CCS projects, a major challenge to developing additional CCS projects continues to be attracting sufficient investment from the private sector. The Canadian experience indicates that financial support from the federal and Alberta governments is an important element in the development of CCS projects.
