How Can Scientific Literacy Be Enhanced in Geography Education? Two Ways Forward: Geoboxes and Digital Experiments

In addressing the pressing global challenges of the future such as climate change or biodiversity loss, geography education stands out for its unique strength in offering an integrated perspective of (natural) science and social science. Despite this strength, there is a noticeable absence of the science perspective in geography lessons in Germany. Inquiry-based science education in geography classrooms is rare, which poses a challenge to achieve a holistic geographical perspective and scientific literacyScientific literacy. To address this need, two approaches to implement a stronger science perspective in geography classrooms are presented: Firstly, science kitsScience kits (Geoboxes): Geoboxes comprise all materials and resources to conduct inquiry-basedInquiry based learning science education in Geography. For example one of the Geoboxes deals with an experimentExperiments about soil erosion. Geoboxes come in a compact box ready-to-use in the classroom. Geoboxes provide teachers with a guided access to science education and additional instructional material. Secondly, digital videos that showcase geographical experimentsExperiments are introduced (ViExGeo). The open access videos are structured along the scientific algorithm. They come with a teaching guide, which offers different instructional settings to support scientific literacyScientific literacy among geography students. Both approaches are critically discussed.
