Supported by research demonstrating enhanced knowledge, skills, and patient outcomes, effective debriefing mirrors Kolb’s experiential learning cycle. Historical roots trace back to World War II, evolving into military after-action reviews and aviation Crew Resource Management training. Modern debriefing emphasizes self-reflection and sustainable performance improvement. Common phases, such as opening the stage, delving deeper, and harvesting learnings, ensure a structured discussion. Techniques like Plus-Delta, Three-Phase Debriefing, and the GAS Model contribute to effective debriefing. Choosing the right debriefing location, be it simulated bedside, a separate room, or in situ simulation, is crucial. The Structured and Supported Debriefing (SSD) model, following the GAS approach, emphasizes structure, support, and participant engagement. Additional tips highlight a humble mindset, ground rules, embracing silence, and lifelong learning.
