Tragedy
摘要
Suffering and diseases raise questions related to the meaning of life as well as to the physician and the nurse’s predicament. For one thing, diseases are third-personal, objective, external medical phenomena, while the patient’s inner story of his illnesses is first-personal and subjective. People begin to value life when it appears to be draining away. The question of the meaning of life is a default position. For another, what makes the doctor’s or the nurse’s situation tragic is that tragedy is in the eye of the observer not in the heart of the sufferer.
