The Role of Military Interventions and Coups D'état in Subverting Democratic Processes in Sub-Saharan Africa
摘要
The history of Africa, more than any other continent, has been marked by military coupsMilitary coups (Mwai, 2019). This phenomenon is often attributed to widespread poverty, corruption, mismanagement of government, and poor economic performance, which the military uses as a justification for seizing power to save the country from collapse and to reform its institutions and economy (Ben Barka & Ncube, 2019). However, despite these challenges, African nations have shown resilience and a strong will to uphold democratic values. This raises a crucial question: Are there still motives for these coups to take place, and what is their future, given the increasing trend of most African countries towards democratic transformation as a result of international and regional pressures and populism? These coups have significant implications for democratic processes and governance, often leading to the disruption of constitutional order and the establishment of military rule, which can have long-term effects on a country's political stability and development (Conteh-Morgan, 2000).
