This chapter presents a narrative history of Brenton McKenna’s life in comics, as the creator of Ubby’s Underdogs, often called Australia’s first Indigenous graphic novel. After foregrounding the history of symbolic and sequential storytelling in First Nations rock art, the author chronicles his influences, challenges, luck, and successes in an intersecting history of his creative, interior, community, publishing, and family lives. The chronicle finishes with recommendations for better supporting the creation of Indigenous comics, in line with the increased profile of graphic storytelling worldwide.
