This chapter identifies the hidden project of Australian comics, for practitioners and theorists, as a project of asking questions about two broad and interrelated areas: communities and cultures, and practices and readings. Beneath these umbrellas are interlinked questions about history and power and how they are expressed through events such as zine and comics fairs, the narratives of individual comics-makers, intersections with technologies, and the readings of comics, as well as the practice of essaying graphic storytelling. The authors find that contemporary approaches to comics scholarship might include close reading, examinations of creative knowledge-production, and borrowing methodologies from critical genres such as publishing and cultural studies, to reflect the range of audiences, markets, and creative practices in which contemporary Australian comics makes its home.
