Adapting to Climate Variability Under Water-Scarce Environment: How Do Diverse Adaptive Initiatives on Irrigation Matter for Farm-Based Livelihood in a Water Insecure Area of West Bengal, India?

In dryland or water-scarce environment, adaptive irrigation practices might be beneficial both for dealing with climate variability and developing a resilient livelihood base of farming. In this chapter, we aimed to address how rural farmers adjust them with their diverse farm-based adaptive endeavours, dealing with climate variability under the prevalence of water-scarce conditions, considering a community development block in Puruliya district of the Indian state of West Bengal. In this respect, this study followed a mixed methodology, applying quantitative and qualitative analytical measures together. The Kruskal-Wallis H test has been applied to find out whether there are significant differences or not between farmers’ common adaptive decision to farm-based adaptability and their predominant adaptive bases of irrigation. Furthermore, a narrative approach is also considered to explore the real-life adaptive experience of farmers, illustrating adaptation feedback of them. Finally, the current study provided valuable insights into the effects of predominant adaptive options of irrigation on farm-based adaptability and farmers’ adaptation endeavours to their farm-based livelihood adjustment.
