Social Network Analysis of Stakeholders in Area-Business Continuity Management: A Case Study of Flood in Thailand

Business is moving on interconnectedness. Disruption in one company leads the domino effects on other companies. The past disaster events indicated the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration. Area-Business Continuity Management (Area-BCM) is disaster resilience and sustainable economics project that calls for various stakeholders’ involvement. In such a context, this study aims to identify key stakeholders and analyze their coordination in Area-BCM. Thailand is selected as a study area because it is a significant hub of automotive and electronic industries connected to global supply chains, and some companies are in vulnerable prone areas to flood hazards. The research methodology deployed stakeholder identification to list key stakeholders and categorize them into seven groups based on roles and responsibilities, including central government, local government, infrastructure providers, industrial operators, private sector, academic institution, and the community. Then, Social Network Analysis (SNA) approach is to analyze network visualization and centrality measures. Data collection is conducted by documentation review and questionnaire survey. The results present the main coordination among stakeholders that are contributed by the central government, especially sharing of flood information. However, the local government needs to increase actions among local parties. Unfortunately, infrastructure providers are left at the periphery of a network, where they only have contact with industrial operators. The outstanding result is that the academic sector takes part in providing scientific evidence and encouraging Area-BCM for the community and industry.
