Chai Vekayam: The Existence and Insistence of God
摘要
This chapter is theological in the classic and narrow sense of the term: it is about the way we think and talk about God. Employing the phrase chai vekayam, the chapter considers different conceptions of God’s existence, comparing them to the ways in which the same term is employed with reference to King David. Metaphors for Divine power and otherness are discussed, with examples taken from classical Jewish sources and from contemporary popular culture. My God both “exists” and “lives,” suggesting different ways in which God can be addressed.
