For millennia, chosenness has been both a touchstone of Jewish identity and a touch paper igniting controversy and peril. Demanding honest appraisal and serious grappling rather than bland apologetics, the concept touches upon the meaning and purpose of Jewish existence and has been described as both a scandal and a linchpin. This chapter explores a variety of ways in which the concept of Jewish Election has been considered, suggests a novel interpretation of the concept of a treasured people, am segulah, highlighting the Jewish propensity for adaptation, and rejects chauvinist and exclusivist readings of Jewish particularity. It rejects the notion that some redemptive happy ending to the human story can be achieved by skipping particular, thick, embodied ways of responding to God’s call.
