This chapter relates to the borders and boundaries which characterize Jewish life by delineating its contours. If modernity is characterized by the undermining of previously observed boundaries, the challenge for modern Judaism is to find a way of respecting traditional frameworks while honoring notions of autonomy and choice. The further blurring of boundaries which can be said to characterize a postmodern sensibility is also discussed. The Hebrew term gader has become linked with migdar, meaning gender, and the impact of feminism and new approaches to gender binaries is also discussed. The image of the biblical ass in the Balaam story, squeezed between two walls, is employed to describe the situation of modern Jew in search of an approach to borders and boundaries while keen to avoid the twin perils of nihilism and fundamentalism.
