Independence, dependence and interdependence are the themes at the heart of this chapter. Regarding each of the three notions, aspects of the contemporary Jewish experience are examined. For example, the Halakhic category of commandments dependent on the Land of Israel is re-interpreted to refer to our dependence on the continued health of a compromised planet. The chapter claims that tomorrow’s Judaism will be wrought in the encounter between dependence and independence. It challenges the statement that the world exists for the sake of this or that group. Rather, the prevailing condition is one of interdependence, or in the language of rabbinic literature, ha beha talya. One thing depends on the other.
