Through an analysis of a speech given by Michael Chabon, and employing language taken from the natural sciences, this chapter considers different modes of discourse about the Jewish condition – solid, liquid and gaseous. Solid expressions emphasize intensive commitment, be it through Halakhic piety, national commitment, or in other ways. The liquid version of Judaism plays up the dynamic and creative aspects, while those who prefer their Judaism ephemeral may like the spirit of something Jewish but, like Chabon, decry a solidity they perceive as intransigence. Rather than decide in favor of one modality or another, one physical state over another, this chapter calls for what it describes as a multi-state approach. It calls for a “plasma Judaism”, looking beyond the limitations of each one of these three classic states.
