Prayer and language are usually bound up together in Judaism. Usually but not invariably. Quoting verses from the psalms, Maimonides argued in his Guide that given the limitations of language, the ideal for prayer should comprise “silence and limiting oneself to the apprehensions of the intellect.” This chapter relates to what may be termed Jewish theologies of prayer, the ways in which Jews have attempted to understand themselves as praying persons. It emphasizes the linguistic aspect of prayer, and explores the connection between God and language. It suggests that one way of understanding the act of prayer is to see it as what happens when intention meets language. For a person committed to a regular prayer life, it can happen occasionally that in living the letters, the letters themselves can live. Prayer can be, to use ideas discussed in a different context by Walter Benjamin, a way of speaking the language of creation back to God who created the universe in language.
