This chapter explores a concept taken from the literature of Jewish Law, with its roots firmly in the Hebrew Bible, in search of a useable approach to Halakhah for a contemporary Jew who is one the one hand not Orthodox, but on the other hand keen to pursue a serious and engaged Jewish life. The neder is understood in Jewish law as a commitment freely given and largely self regulated, and its potential for being re-understood and re-purposed is considerable. The chapter takes issue with the concept of informed choice, a staple of Reform Jewish thought, suggesting that by itself it may not be equal to the task of meaning making. It suggests that re-examining the neder, an instrument of Jewish commitment from earliest times, may be a promising development in the search for a viable Reform Judaism of tomorrow.
