Neuromusculoskeletal (NMSK) ultrasound of the hip provides a real-time, high-resolution evaluation of essential anatomical structures, offering valuable insights for both diagnostic and interventional purposes. This imaging technique facilitates a thorough assessment of the hip joint and acetabulum, allowing for the detection of joint effusions, synovitis, and degenerative changes. The iliopsoas tendon can be analyzed for conditions such as tendinopathy, bursitis, or snapping hip syndrome. Additionally, the femoral nerve and artery serve as critical landmarks for regional anesthesia and interventional procedures. The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, often associated with meralgia paresthetica, can also be visualized to identify potential entrapment or compression issues. Evaluating the greater trochanter and iliotibial band is essential in diagnosing greater trochanteric pain syndrome, which encompasses conditions like trochanteric bursitis and gluteal tendinopathy. Furthermore, the posterior aspects should include an assessment of the sciatic nerve and piriformis muscle, particularly concerning piriformis syndrome or sciatic neuropathy. Ultrasound also allows for precise injection into the sacroiliac joint, aiding in the treatment of inflammatory arthritis. With its real-time capabilities and high sensitivity, NMSK ultrasound of the hip is an invaluable tool for guiding clinical decision-making and interventions.
