This study undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the sustainability of the agri-food sector within the member states of the European Union (EU), addressing its environmental, social, and economic dimensions. The findings indicate moderate overall levels of sustainability in the EU agri-food sector, accompanied by notable disparities among the member states. France, Austria, and Italy are identified as leaders in sustainability efforts, whereas Malta, Cyprus, Bulgaria, and Hungary appear to be lagging. Furthermore, this study demonstrates decreased agricultural profitability and disparities in social sustainability. Environmental repercussions, such as pesticide usage, energy consumption, and organic farming practices, are also evaluated, revealing diverse sustainability practices and impacts across different countries. The document concludes by advocating for targeted national interventions to bridge sustainability gaps and augment the overall sustainability of the EU agri-food sector. It emphasizes the paramount importance of adopting innovative approaches, enhancing practices, and implementing supportive policies for farmers.
