Geosites represent a large spectrum of features and sites of scientific significance and/or spectacular appearance. Geosites of archaeological significance awoke great curiosity in recent time and offer high potential of geotourism and research. Recent studies in the northwestern Indian plains have brought out stronger scientific evidence for (i) the existence of a Himalayan glacier-fed river now present as palaeochannel/s of characteristic hydrological traits (ii) a significantly large hydrological regime (iii) existence of now extinct Harappan age mounds association and (iv) composite geological-archaeological mounds indicating human habitation significantly older than the Harappan civilization. These geoheritage sites have great potential for geotourism but require immediate protection.
