Chitrakoot Region, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh: A Potential UNESCO Global Geopark

India’s geological history has created exceptional geodiversity, featuring stable cratons, dynamic mountains, vast volcanic provinces, and diverse sedimentary basins that shape its unique landscape. Despite rich geological diversity and the conservation efforts directed towards geoheritage sites, the establishment of national or UNESCO Global Geoparks remains a pending endeavor. This paper aims to assess the potential of the Chitrakoot region in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh to develop into a geopark, serving as a model for similar regions in India. The region’s geological significance is notable, featuring the unique contact of Vindhyan sediments with its basement Bundelkhand granites exposed only in Chitrakoot in Central India. Majhagawan, the only working diamond mine in India, wildlife centuries, exotic waterfalls, caves, rock paintings, and historic sites make it very close to a geopark. The proposed Chitrakoot Geopark satisfies the criteria for global geopark status, necessitating actions for UNESCO recognition. This endeavor not only promotes community-led geoheritage conservation but also fosters sustainable development through local handicrafts and traditions.
