Fossilized faecal matter (coprolite) of pre-historic vertebrates provide interesting records of the dietary habit(s), change(s) in the dietary pattern (if any), and assist to reconstruct the surrounding habitat(s) in the geological past. In India, the research on coprolites was initiated in the later half of the eighteenth century and has since focussed on the large (>10 cm in length) Maastrichtian Type-A coprolites from the infratrappean deposit of Pisdura, Maharashtra State, central India. However, in the past few years new data on coprolites from co-eval and younger (Paleogene-Neogene) sedimentary sequences has been recorded. Overall, coprolite records are a rarity in India as gaps exist in the fossil record of these ichnofossils. These ichnofossils occur sporadically in geographically distant locations, but have the potential to reveal crucial information on pre-historic animal-environment interactions. In view of the palaeontological potential of coprolite ichnofossils and popularity of ongoing geoconservation efforts in India, it is necessary that existing and newly discovered fossiliferous (coprolite-yielding) sites and/or regions should be sustainably protected through standard policies following an inclusive approach with local communities, state, and central agencies.
