This chapter serves as an introduction to the volume and its different sections. It provides a short overview of the main topics of interest in relation to the Digital Euro, while also linking to the comprehensive analyses reviewed in detail by the various authors. It offers a broad analysis of the different legislative proposals focusing on the ECB's project and the legislative package under discussion. The long preparations are indicative of the massive turnaround that can be expected from the introduction of the Digital Euro. The Digital Euro will require the creation of a completely new infrastructure both at the level of the Eurosystem and at the level of the existing operators of the retail payment systems, both when it comes to the banks and payment institutions (as far as the online variant is concerned) and at the acceptance points (as far as the offline variant is concerned).
