Beyond the Cane: Exploring Design Advancements in Smart Sticks for Enhanced Navigation (2018-2023)

Navigating unfamiliar environments remains a challenge for individuals with visual impairments. Fortunately, recent technological advancements have brought forth innovative smart stick prototypes to aid in independent navigation. This survey delves into the design landscape of smart sticks, meticulously analyzing 21 studies published between 2018 and 2023. Our analysis reveals a strong preference for Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and ultrasonic sensors as core components. The integration of additional sensors like water and infrared detectors broadens the capabilities of these systems, while the inclusion of cameras enriches data collection. Interestingly, the survey identifies the Jetson Nano as an underexplored yet promising technology. Furthermore, the studies showcase the impressive adaptability of smart stick technology. The utilization of diverse microcontrollers and exploration of varying detection ranges demonstrate the potential for customization and innovation to meet specific needs. This comprehensive survey offers valuable insights for researchers and developers, illuminating promising avenues for future advancements in smart stick technology and ultimately empowering independent navigation for the visually impaired.
