Evolution and Expression Patterns of the Sucrose Transporter Genes During the Growth and Development of Mango by Using a Bioinformatics Approach

Sugars Will Eventually be Exported Transporter (SWEET) has been considered as one of the major families of sucrose transporters that play a key role in numerous biological processes in plant species. In this study, we comprehensively analyzed the evolution and expression of the SWEET gene family in mango (Mangifera indica). By exploring the coding DNA sequence and genomic DNA sequence of each member of the SWEET gene family in mango, we predicted that tandem duplication, segmental duplication, and whole genome duplication events were major reasons for the expansion of the SWEET gene family in mango. Next, all members of the SWEET family in mangoes were found to be localized in the plasma membrane. Based on the transcriptomic analysis, our results revealed that several genes were specifically expressed in major organs of mango plants. Two genes, including MiSWEET04 and 18 were highly expressed in flowers, while MiSWEET09, 16, and 17 were strongly expressed in roots. Taken together, our study could provide a solid foundation of the SWEET gene family in mango for further functional characterization.
