Long-Term and Short-Term Memory

Input data is stored permanently in long-term memory, if it is “interesting.” Whether it’s interesting or not, all input data is stored temporarily in short-term memory. The same segment designs for long-term memory by nature are also incorporated into the short-term memory segments. Long-term memory records a database that accumulates over a person’s lifetime and includes innate data (Camina and Guell in Front Pharmacol 8:e00438, 2017). Input data is seen through a moving window in short-term memory. The window width (its “span”) determines the amount of data stored at any moment in time. The short-term memory consists of a large number of memory “elements,” each with its own timespan. Some elements may have a very short span, on the order of 10 s. Others may have medium-length spans, on the order of one hour. Yet others may have much longer spans, on the order of a day, possibly longer. With an intuitive sense of time, a volitional selector switch determines the element to provide the short-time memory output. Prompt signals trigger recall for both short-term and long-term memories.
