The U.S. Air Force has a base on the small island Diego Garcia, located in the Indian Ocean. This island is about two miles long and is narrow. There is a runway on the island. A satellite photo of Diego Garcia can be seen in Fig. 10.1. The problem is to identify the aircraft parked on the tarmac on the two sides of the runway. In the satellite photos, there are three types of aircraft: B52 heavy bombers, KC135 tankers for in-flight refueling, and B2 stealth bombers. The images of the aircraft were taken through foggy conditions, making identification challenging. Sunlight striking the aircraft gave different perspectives and shadows between those on one side of the runway and those on the other side. One sample of the B52 images was taken on the other side. The same was taken for the KC135’s. Only one sample image of the B2 was taken. These samples were labeled and used to train a machine cognitive memory. After training, the memory system was able to perfectly identify all the aircraft images, both training patterns and patterns not in the training set. The recognition process was tolerant of the variations in the foggy images.
