This chapter takes a step back from the overview of the death of the author premise given in the previous chapter to examine key figures who emphasized the connection between authorial intent and decolonization even prior to Barthes’ declaration emphasized the controversies of the various position taking implied by his essay. The chapter emphasizes the work of two figures: Wilson Harris and then, even more significantly, Frantz Fanon. Each of these figures differently explored the meaning of authorial intent and the creative act in conceptualizing the role of the author in anticolonial politics.
