Designing Tools for Graphite-Free Additive Friction Stir Deposition of 7xxx Aluminum

Additive Friction Stir DepositionAdditive friction stir deposition (AFSD) isAluminum a derivative technology of friction stir weldingFriction stir welding. AFSD produces parts through a solid-state metal additive manufacturingAdditive manufacturing process. AFSD is used to produce fully dense and consolidated parts, however, the use of graphite lubricant in the process has historically led to contamination, which has limited the usability of these parts. Contaminate-free (graphite-freeGraphite free) AFSD parts are critical to the adoption of AFSD in industry. Design changes have been made to current tooling options to allow for graphite-freeGraphite free AFSD. These changes were made to replicate the role of graphite in the AFSD process. The design has proven successful in enabling printing without the use of graphite lubricant by achieving similar effects with tool designTool design to that of the graphite lubricants in the AFSD process. Combining improved tool with appropriate controls for the AFSD process has enabled graphite-freeGraphite free deposition of aluminumAluminum 7075 and 7050.
