The rapid growth of lithiumLithium-ionLithium-ion battery batteryBattery (LIB)LIB batteries usage in India is driven by strong demand for consumer electronics and electric vehicles. This transition requires increased recyclingRecycling of spent LIBSpent lithium-ion batteries waste to recover valuable metals and an effective end-of-life (EOL) managementEnd-of-life management strategy to mitigate related environmental impactsEnvironmental impact. India currently has a processing capacity of about 35,000 tonnes per year for processing LIBs by various companies, with 10,000 tonnes/year dedicated to only mechanical processing. By 2030, India's Li-ion cell manufacturing industryIndustry will require approximately 193,000 tonnes of cathode active material, 98,000 tonnes of anode active material, 91,000 tonnes of aluminium, 41,000 tonnes of copperCopper, and 8,000 tonnes of LiPF6 electrolyteElectrolyte material to produce batteriesBattery with a total capacity of 100 GWh. The current recyclingRecycling capacity needs to be expanded ninefold to meet this recyclingRecycling potential by 2030. This paper comprehensively explores current recyclingRecycling technologies for LIBs in India and assesses these techniques based on lithium recoveryLithium recovery rates, techno-economic feasibility, and environmental sustainabilitySustainability. Furthermore, the study identifies the current industryIndustry players, their recyclingRecycling capacities, the status and potential capital costs of recyclingRecycling plants, and different value chain modelsValue chain models. The latter includes the traditional linear and circular economyCircular economy approaches, both of which are analysed to propose a robust framework suitable for India. The outcomes identify proposed solutions to improve the environmental impactEnvironmental impact of LIB usage.
