The subtropical Andean forests are situated in the southernmost extent of the Andean forests (18–28 °S). Covering approximately 40.000 km2 in Argentina and spanning more than 2.000 m of elevation gradient, these forests are vital habitats supporting a human population of over two million people. Over the past three decades, research efforts have been devoted to understanding the biodiversity and structure of the subtropical Andean forests, facilitated by the establishment and monitoring of more than 70 permanent plots across these forests. We have gained valuable insights into ecosystem functions such as biomass accumulation rates and demographic patterns. In this chapter, we integrated forest data with satellite imagery to map patterns of tree diversity and biomass at the regional scale. The combined analysis of these patterns allowed us to identify areas with high conservation value (e.g., higher diversity, higher biomass stocks, or both). In addition, we analyzed the relationship between forest structure (in terms of biomass and tree diversity) and mammal species richness at the landscape scale. Finally, we discussed the critical need for ongoing biodiversity monitoring and conservation efforts in the context of practical implications for land management and conservation planning for the subtropical Andean forest of northwestern Argentina.
