The Impact of MNEs on Ocean Sustainability
摘要
This chapter demonstrates that industrial activities often release chemical effluents into marine ecosystems via direct discharge and runoff. Fast fashion contributes 190 thousand tonnes of oceanic primary microplastics annually, and the fishing sector has overexploited 35 percent of fish stocks. Additional sources of marine pollution include oil spills, pharmaceutical discharges, semiconductor effluents, and shipping ballast water. Given their technical and financial capabilities, MNEs are responsible for conserving oceans and marine ecosystems. By deploying policy and technological interventions, MNEs can contribute significantly to the tenets of SDG 14.
