Fifth party logistics (5PL) is a new outsourcing concept. This concept is very much on the agenda in Industry 4.0. A 5PL is the logistics part that uses all the eminent technological resources for logistics orchestration. The online trade, or e-business, is one of the sectors that makes the most use of these logistics service providers since it relies on digital-based logistics. Thus, this article unfolds a systematic literature review that seeks to answer 3 research questions: What is a 5PL? Why can’t a 4PL fulfill the functions of a 5PL? What opportunities for future research exist? At the end of this work, we understand how 5PL is conceptualized in the literature, its differences from other players, practical and theoretical implications.
