Cartographic representations are complex, media-mediated constructs that reflect and influence social and political power structures. They are not only used for orientation, but can also fulfill manipulative or emancipatory functions. This book considers maps as interactive, performative tools and offers a 15-point questionnaire for recognizing manipulative cartography. Neopragmatist cartography is developing in response to the tension between cartographic construction and power structures. It goes beyond critical cartography by not only deconstructing, but actively creating useful maps that solve practical problems while creating an awareness of social and linguistic contingencies. In contrast to dichotomous approaches, it pursues a fallibilist approach in which maps must prove themselves in their application. Transparency, reflection and the examination of power relations are central principles that guarantee an ethically and scientifically sound cartography.

摘要
