The autonomous Spanish region of Catalonia is undergoing a significant transformation in its healthcare system through the adoption of an open platform paradigm, focusing on people-centred care, interoperability, and the strategic use of digital technologies. This approach aims to advance healthcare delivery by enhancing integration, flexibility, and user-friendliness within the digital health ecosystem. Key initiatives include the development of the Catalan eHealth Platform, the implementation of the Shared Electronic Health Record (HC3), and the deployment of various eHealth solutions such as ePrescription and the My Health portal (LMS). These efforts are driven by the region’s commitment to improving health outcomes, fostering innovation, and ensuring the sustainability of the healthcare system. Catalonia’s digital health journey reflects its high digital maturity, marked by advanced Health information technologies (HIT) infrastructure and strategic use of health data to build value-added services. Despite challenges such as system fragmentation, data security, and the need for continuous stakeholder engagement, Catalonia’s strategic planning and robust governance model have laid a strong foundation for this transition. The region’s experience offers valuable insights for global healthcare systems aiming to leverage digital technologies for better patient care.
