Evaluation of Applicability of Natural Pineapple Leaf Fibers for Preparation of Coating Mortars

One of the main problems involving the application of these materials is the high water absorption, which can be mitigated with chemical treatments. This work investigates the impact of treating natural fibers from pineapple with tannic acidTannic acid at concentrations of 2.5, 5, and 0% (without treatment). X-ray diffractions were performed from which the crystallinity indices were calculated. To study wettability, the contact angles of the samples were determined. There was an increase in crystallinity in the treated fibers. The angles obtained were greater in the treated fibers, indicating a lower affinity with water. Therefore, it is concluded that tannic acidTannic acid can enable lignocellulosic fibers as a reinforcement phase of cementitious mortarsMortar, from the perspective of reducing water absorption.
