SALIENT Project—Optimizing Crash Performance of 6063 Aluminum Alloy for Sustainable Lightweight Vehicles

Due to its uniqueSustainability properties and impact on the environment, aluminumAluminum has been receiving lots of attention nowadays. Achieving fuel efficiency and reducing GHG emissionsEmissions today heavily depend on lightweighting. It accelerates the transition towards sustainable transportation by enabling the production of lighter vehicles that consume less fuel. In this study, 6063 aluminum alloyAluminum alloy has been modified by altering element composition to achieve better crash performance as part of the EU-funded Horizon Europe SALIENTSALIENT project. To accomplish this, enhanced alloy billets were cast using DC CastingDC casting and then homogenized. Afterwards, crash-box shaped profiles were produced by extrusionExtrusion and heat treated. Tensile and compression tests were performed on the profile to assess its mechanical propertiesMechanical properties. Optical microscope was used for examination of the profile’s microstructureMicrostructure. Findings indicate that the designed alloy meets the requirements of automotiveAutomotive industryIndustry satisfactorily.
