Study of Precipitates Formed During Solidification and Post-solidification Stage in Low-Sc Al-Mg-Sc Alloys

Low-Sc (< 0.2 wt.%) alloys warrant attention due to the high cost of Sc, which limits the broader application of these alloys. This research investigates the AlMg3Sc0.1, AlMg5Sc0.1, and AlMg10Sc0.1 alloy samples manufactured through directional solidificationDirectional solidification. The aim was to identify and comprehend both the Sc-particles resulting from solidificationSolidification and those that formed subsequently. SEM–EDS and TEM analyses revealed that either submicrometric or nanometric particles constitute the microstructureMicrostructure. The growth of the ternary α-Al + AlFe + β-Al3Mg2 eutectic was identified in the intercellular/interdendritic regions of the alloys. The β-Al3Mg2 phase was detected in the micrographs of the three Al-Mg-Sc alloysAl-Mg-Sc alloys, with more detailed observation in the fractureFracture region of the AlMg3Sc0.1 alloy sample. The Al3Sc phase was identified forming isolated primary clusters during solidificationSolidification in the AlMg5Sc0.1 and AlMg10Sc0.1 alloys. Nanometric Al3Sc particles with irregular shapes and dimensions smaller than 10 nm were identified in the AlMg5Sc0.1 alloy solidified at 0.7 K/s.
