A Hydroponic Approach to Overcome the Drought Stress Problem for Vegetable Production
摘要
During the past two decades, hydroponics plant production has increased tremendously all over the world. Climate change and heavy industrialization is affecting cultivable soil day by day. Moreover, use of chemicals and heavy fertilizers have depleted the soil resources and has negative effects on human health. Recent studies showed that many vegetable crops including potato, tomato, peppers, and leafy vegetables showed good potential to be grown under hydroponics system. This system also provides sustainable vegetable growth with minimum input. The use of controlled environment growth also provides plants safety against pests and weeds. It can also play important role against abiotic stresses especially drought. As studies have shown that it requires 70% less moisture compared to soil moisture needs. Currently, world needs a plant growth system which requires least labor and resources to produce quality vegetables. In this book chapter, we explained about the use of hydroponics techniques and their types that can be used for sustainable vegetable production.
