The lecture that I have the honour of giving to-day is dedicated to the memory of Leonard Hobhouse. I am glad to have known him, for Hobhouse was a philosopher whose philosophy informed his life. I count myself fortunate in having been associated with him for several years on University and other committees, during the work of which my respect for him was in no wise diminished but in fact increased. My academic colleagues, knowing how frequently human beings fall below themselves in committee-work, will realize that I desire to pay no small tribute to his personality and powers.
