Water-Based Infrastructure and Resilience in Selected Zimbabwe Resilience Building Fund (ZRBF) Consortiums in South-Western Zimbabwe

This chapter focuses on water-based infrastructure and how the different water-related resilience capacities are contributing to building resilience outcomes in three ZRBF consortiums. Based on qualitative data, the chapter seeks to establish the water-related stresses and shocks and forms or types of water-based strategies; determine the motivations in supporting the different forms of water technologies; examine the resilience outcomes; and identify challenges to resilience. There are diverse water-related shocks and stresses experienced by communities including droughts, excessive rains, contamination of fresh water sources, pasture and forage shortages. Despite these challenges there are resilience capacities in the form of water infrastructures that have been established, which include irrigation canals, mechanised boreholes, dams, fishponds and solar-powered boreholes. The introduction of solar-powered boreholes and piped water and irrigation facilities ensured that women and children put in less labour in fetching water for use at the household level. The availability of water near the households provided free time to women, which enabled them to venture into other income-generating ventures such as vending, sewing and other livelihood options. Mechanised water facilities ensured that the livelihood options for the people are well developed by providing opportunities to venture into market gardening, fish farming and other income-generating activities. Challenges to resilience include diversion of water by those engaged in brick making and gold panning, environmental damage and costly repairs and maintenance.
