Implementation science utilizes various strategies and structured frameworks to facilitate the successful implementation of evidenced-based practices to improve healthcare quality, safety, and efficacy. This chapter examines various implementation strategies and gives an example of two possible implementation frameworks, the RE-AIM and Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), that may be utilized to improve implementation of important clinical practices. We also will address a real-world example of implementation science focused on improving the delivery of care to pediatric congenital cardiac surgery patients designed utilizing the CFIR framework. This example will focus on an implementation strategy to improve the timing of gastrostomy tube placement to facilitate an earlier time from consultation to surgery and time from consultation to hospital discharge.
