Evidence based practice is becoming the standard for how we decrease variation in care, develop protocols and care for patients according to documented best practices and techniques. It is more difficult to implement many of the principles in the surgical fields. In this chapter, the basic tenets are reviewed in addition to covering emerging principles and datasets that most practicing surgeons should understand.
