With the advent of robotics, operating within the chest and mediastinum has transformed quickly. The instruments, energy devices, staplers, and ergonomics of operating with the robot has greatly facilitated resection of tumors and lesions that may otherwise be deemed inoperable. While the indications for robotic surgery for benign esophageal pathology remains the same as for open surgeries, contraindications include extensive thoracic or abdominal adhesions that preclude a minimally invasive approach. In this chapter, we will focus on three different benign diseases of the esophagus: leiomyoma, achalasia, and epiphrenic diverticulum. We will highlight the robotic techniques for these three pathologies and then highlight the pearls and pitfalls for each of the pathology.
