Herbicides are a diverse class of compounds that are toxic to plants. They are used on crops, lawns, orchards, and golf courses and in forestry as an economic way to control undesirable weeds that decrease agricultural yields or to improve the aesthetic appearance of lawns and golf courses. Commercial preparations contain a mixture of ingredients that can increase the hazards beyond that of the active agent. Many have the potential to be irritating to eyes, skin, and airways. Serious human poisonings primarily occur with ingestions. Many, including glyphosate products that are the most widely used in the United States, are corrosive when ingested.
