Since its creation in 2017, the Institut France-Québec Maritime (IFQM) has had a significant impact on transcontinental collaboration and research and acted as a catalyst to strengthen existing partnerships and created new ties. It has financed several ambitious research projects jointly undertaken by French and Quebec institutions. The project we wish to describe here in more detail, ARICO (Co-construction of adaptation scenarios of coastal zones to natural hazards in the context of climate change) is a good example of the philosophy of the IFQM, as it is led by a team of researchers from several French and Quebec universities, adopts an interdisciplinary approach, is problem-oriented, and includes practitioners who actively participate in the research activities. The project addresses the vulnerability and adaptation to coastal risks and climate change of two study sites, the Matanie region in Quebec and the Bigouden Sud region in France. Through participatory research, coastal risks, land use planning and management practices by public authorities, as well as the role of the private sector could be compared between the two regions, which yielded valuable insights. The participatory nature of the project was appreciated by both researchers and practitioners. Such an approach creates conditions that favor the transfer of knowledge from the academic sector to decision-makers and the establishment of networks which can endure beyond the duration of the project.
